Re: It's January - what are you reading?

Enh, you don't have to have read it, though it helps if you're familiar with the story. (There are minor characters like the maidens and her other suitors that are in the Odyssey.) Atwood is just telling her story and giving her more layers.

I thought it was :awesome

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

I'm reading The Age of Innocence . I'm still reading Swann's Way , but that one I think will just be a few pages every once in a while. It's quite good and not at all difficult, but it's so dense. You just can't blow through 50 pages at a time. My goal is more quality, less quantity in 2010. April, ...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

It was good, huh? How did you manage with all the Spanish? I had to ask Kayley for help a couple of times! It didn't really bother me. I understood a few words, and even if I didn't, I could basically infer what was happening from the scene, so I was like "Annnd... she's cussing, got it."...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

I finished "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao." I thought it was really, really quite good. I almost can't believe it's a first novel, but apparently it took him 10 years to write, so I believe that.

Next, I'm starting Book 1 of Proust. Am I crazy? I might just be. :paranoid

Bugsy wrote:Crystal, do you recommend specific novels by Toews or just that I should read her in general? I added her name and The Book of Dahlia to my "to be read" list. :)

In general, but my favourites are The Flying Troutmans, and Summer of my Amazing Luck. :awesome

Re: What were your faves in 2009?

Go go, Canadian authors, apparently. :) Go go, Canadian authors, always. ;) Please read Miriam Toews next! I read lots of good books this year, but the one that I keep urging on people is The Book of Dahlia by Julia Albert. The author manages to make the main character's family dysfunction seem sad...

Re: 500 books in a year!

I've never been at a loss for *good* books, good being subjective. (And keeping in mind that anything I call good, Silvia hates. ;) ) I also use Librarything, Indigo, the books section of the NYT and Globe & Mail, and the awards nominations (Pulitzer, Nobel, Governor's General, Giller and even t...

Re: Best Books of the '00s

I liked White Teeth , so of course Silvia didn't. ;) I saw another article from the London Times that was the 100 most influential books of the decade. So, it included the big award-winners, but also The Da Vinci Code and Twilight - books that were poorly written but struck a chord with reading audi...

Re: It's November! What are you reading?

I'm never going to make 50 books by the end of the year. :crying I'm reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog. It's a bit dry and philosophical, but I like dry and philosophical. Maybe that's why I can't blow through more books more quickly. :lol Blush, I saw Nick Hornby read from Juliet, Naked last mon...

We'll get to 3 pages, Rowan!

I just started The Rise of the Creative Class. I've wanted to read this one for a while, and it's very good, but I think I need something more brain candy-ish right now. :enh

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

Well, I put "The Help" on hold at the library, and I'm 521st out of 521 holds. :lol So I won't be reading that one for a while... That's okay, though. I'm reading a book called "Alligator" by Lisa Moore. She's also a poet, and you can tell. The book isn't about much, but every si...

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

I haven't been reading much, and that makes me ANGRY. :phbtt! But with moving, I haven't been reading at home and I'm so tired after work I fall asleep on the subway. (And I hate sleeping on the subway. :lol) Still reading The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Maybe I will reserve The Help ; it will give ...

Re: It's September - what are you reading?

I'm not a mom, but I definitely thought parts were sad. The woman has all but abandoned her son! But I think it's important to show the ugly side of humans as well as the good, so I "enjoyed" seeing it addressed, if that makes any sense. I'm starting "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.&q...

Re: It's September - what are you reading?

I think it's really good, so far. She writes really well, and throws in a sucker-punch every once in a while so you're like "OMG, what??"

All the stories have this woman Olive in them, so it doesn't really feel like short stories because they're all connected.

I will never come close to Rowan's speed-i-tude. ;) I'm at about 40 books for the year, so far.

I'm reading "Olive Kittredge" by Elizabeth Strout. Gawd, I wish I could write like that...

I just started "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell. I need to pick another book because I'm leeeeeeeaving on a jet plane on Saturday to see my momma. I'm thinking of "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao." It won the Pulitzer, so it should be alright. ;)
