Re: August! What are you reading?

I started Almost Perfect by Dianne Blacklock (the Australian Liane Moriarty recommended). I'm only 8% in, but it seems right up my alley. I'm ridiculously excited, because this would mean not just the first decent book I've read in a MONTH, but a new author to explore! She seems to write that slight...

Re: August! What are you reading?

OMG, the Brazilian romance was AWFUL! Horribly contrived and sugary. The writing was so, so bad.

I think I might try this Australian author Liane Moriarty recommended, Dianne Blacklock.

Re: August! What are you reading?

Read The Light We Lost. It sucked. Sugary love (?) story whose publishers tried to sell as something readers of Me Before You would love. These comparisons should be forbidden. And Jojo should sue them. Couldn't get into Affinity by Sarah Waters. I've read one book by her that I liked (The Little St...

Re: August! What are you reading?

I finished The Deepest Secret by Carla Buckley. It had an interesting premise and nothing else. Dragged and dragged and when it finally got to the resolution, it was rushed. Then I read The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy. Omg, it was awful. Unoriginal, with interchangeable characters (it took me hal...

Re: August! What are you reading?

Looks interesting. I'm sure nature will be amazing. The cities, not so much. You're probably the first person I've met who will have been to Santarém :)

Re: August! What are you reading?

Oh, ok. The beginning is a bit slow, so I thought you couldn't get into it.

Did you mention Brazil on that cruise?

Re: July! What are you reading?

Finished Day Four. Yeah, I realize why the average rating is so bad. It started out great, then it got repetitive, and the ending is completely open to interpretation. And not in a good way. I'm not opposed to open-ended novels, but this one didn't give me enough elements to make my own interpretati...

Re: July! What are you reading?

Finished the flu pandemic book. Really enjoyed it. The first half is a bit slow, but then it picks up. What is it with the crumbling of society as we know it that fascinates us so? Now I'm reading Day Four by Sarah Lotz. It's supposed to be a horror story. It has only a 3.3 goodreads rating, and Mel...

Re: July! What are you reading?

I think a flu pandemic is more possible than we would like to believe.
Right?

In the book I'm reading the family's quarantined at home. It's winter in Ohio and they've lost power. I keep thinking that if it were here at least we wouldn't freeze to death :paranoid

Re: July! What are you reading?

Err.... that wasn't working either. So now I got The Things That Keep Us Here by Carla Buckley. I'd been curious about this author, and this is about a flu pandemic killing most people on earth :awesome Sounds like fun.

Re: July! What are you reading?

I got to 25% of the Kiss Quotient and returned it. The premise seemed interesting, but I got bored easily and the rest seemed painfully predictable. Then I got Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah because I was in the mood for one of her long soap operas. We'll see.

Re: July! What are you reading?

Yay, so glad you loved Furies too, Blush! And you're right, anything right after it will be a disappointment :mope I felt the same way. I finished The Break by Marian Keyes, which was much better than I expected. I hated the last book I read by her, but this seemed interesting, and it was. She's so ...

July! What are you reading?

I finished The House of Special Purpose. Yeah, it never got any better than readable. Then I wanted something light. Picked up The Break by Marian Keyes. I hated the last book I read by her (The Mystery of Mercy Close), but I did like several others, so decided to give this a shot. So far it's enter...

Re: June: what are you reading?

Korie, I'm done with lists and with what I "should" read. I'm not getting grades or getting paid for what I read, so I read whatever seems good to my taste and mood! I'm reading The House of Special Purpose by John Boyne, historical fiction involving the Romanovs. It's not as good as I expected, but...

Re: June: what are you reading?

I finished The Heart's Invisible Furies. LOVED it. Top 5 of the decade, for sure. I was expecting a lot of drama, which it has. I was NOT expecting hilarious dialog. I laughed out loud several times. Loved the structure (a person's life told in segments 7 years apart from each other), was horrified ...

Re: June: what are you reading?

I'm still reading (and enjoying) The Heart's Invisible Furies, but yesterday I read a short book by a Brazilian plus-size model. She claims to have never wanted to be thinner, to have always loved her body as it is, and that she's saddened by how much energy women spend obsessing about weight. I thi...

Re: June: what are you reading?

I finished Lilac Girls. It was good, not great. It took me a while to get into and, although it was based on true facts, the author made up some things that didn't work for me. Still, recommended if you're into WW2 novels. Then I started The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne, which had been on ...
