Re: No March thread yet, uh?

I finished up The Almost Moon this evening. Rachael and Blush, I thought it was okay. Not great, but not terrible, either. I've never read The Lovely Bones, though (as the mother of an adolescent daughter, I'm not sure I could stand it), so I didn't have any expectations about her writing.

Re: No March thread yet, uh?

I read A Thousand Acres when it came out. I thought it was good, but not Pulitzer-worthy. I never saw the movie.

Right now I'm reading The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. Good so far, but even just fifty pages in I can tell it's going to be gut-wrenching.

Re: No March thread yet, uh?

Oh my god, you guys ... Catching Fire was SO good. But why, oh why, didn't anyone warn me not to start reading these books until the third one was out?! Waiting for the ending will be AGONIZING!

Re: No March thread yet, uh?

I've haven't read it ... I keep thinking I should read all those great Russian authors, but I never get around to it.

Right now I'm reading Catching Fire, the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy. It's very good so far.

Re: It's February! What are you reading?

After reading all the rave reviews here of The Hunger Games , I decided I'd give it a try. I finished it a little while ago, and, wow! What an amazing book! I've already ordered Catching Fire , and I'm so glad I won't have to wait too many months until the third book comes out. Now back to The Other...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

I finished The Girl Who Stopped Swimming, and it was pretty good. Definitely the best of her three books, in my opinion.

I've just started The Other Boleyn Girl and I'm still working on the Craig Ferguson book.

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

I finished The Hunger Games yesterday. Wow, what a good story! I really loved it. Didn't some of you guys say that the rest of the trilogy wasn't that good, though? What are they about? So far only the second book is out - "Catching Fire". I loved it. I think Beverly said she felt the sto...

The footnotes were probably my favorite part ... I hadn't had any idea, either.

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

I finished "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao." I thought it was really, really quite good. I almost can't believe it's a first novel, but apparently it took him 10 years to write, so I believe that. It was good, huh? How did you manage with all the Spanish? I had to ask Kayley for hel...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

Thanks for the recommendation, Mellen ... I haven't seen the movie, but I'll make sure now that I don't until I've read the book!

Right now I'm reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and so far it's very good.

Re: It's January - what are you reading?

I'm reading The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory. It's the first of hers I've read (I found it in English at the Salvation Army, which is why I started out of order), and I'm liking it very much.

Re: It's December - what are you reading?

In Swedish it's called Men Who Hate Women, so the Portuguese translation is more faithful. The English title doesn't really make much sense, but whatever .... Anyway, it's a slow-goer at the beginning, but the story does eventually pick up, I promise. :)

Mellen, I felt the same about The 19th Wife. It was okay, but unsatisfying somehow.

Crystal, I think you'll really like People of the Book when you get a chance to read it.

Re: It's December - what are you reading?

I'm reading Time and Again by Jack Finney. It's a time-travel novel that I first read when I was in high school, I think. This is probably the third or fourth time I'm reading it, and it's just as good (maybe even better!) than the first time.

Re: Best Books of the '00s

That is a strange list, I think. Anyway, these are the books I've read: The Blind Assassin -- loved it; seriously, one of the best books I've ever read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao -- a really good book, but maybe too much Spanish in key passages (I had to have Kayley help me when I was read...

Re: It's November! What are you reading?

I finished People of the Book last week, and it was so, so good. Now I'm trying to get into fantasy novel called Humility Garden by Felicity Savage (that HAS to be a pen name). I found it on one of Olof's bookshelves and was drawn in by the title. I'm not much of a fantasy reader though, so we'll se...

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

I finished the last of the Stieg Larsson books, and was a little sad to see them end (the author died, so there won't be any more). Now I'm on to People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

I finished "Cat's Eye" by Margaret Atwood--LOVED it. Definitely one of my favorites from this year. That was the first Margaret Atwood I ever read, and it turned me into a fan for life! I need to re-read it. Right now I'm still plugging away at the Stieg Larsson. I read more slowly in Swe...

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

I've got a slow-goer, too. I'm reading Luftslottet som sprängdes by Stieg Larsson, the third book in the Millennium trilogy. The title translates to "the air castle that exploded," but the title of the English translation is "The Girl Who Kicked a Hornet's Nest" or something sim...
