Re: November already! What are you reading?

I just read Tiny, Beautiful Things (Dear Sugar) by Cheryl Strayed. I had read most of the columns online but some of them were new to me. Definitely a tear-jerker, wakeup call and soothing hug all in one.

Re: November already! What are you reading?

Glad you are liking Big Stone Gap! If you are looking for more memoirs I would highly recommend Nora Ephron's "I feel bad about my neck". It is funny and her voice is both soothing and energizing. I also loved Michael Moore's memoir that came out last year, "Here comes trouble". ...

Re: November already! What are you reading?

Last night I finished Freak. It probably would have been better had I read Creep first, but it was suspenseful, at least. I skipped over some of the gory parts. Then I started "Tiny, Beautiful Things: advice on love and life from Dear Sugar" by Cheryl Strayed. I know that will be a tear je...

November already! What are you reading?

I'm about to start "Freak" by Jennifer Hillier. I haven't yet read "Creep" which I think comes before this one but I hope it won't matter.

Re: It's October...what are you reading?

Bugsy, I agree with the Bernadette suggestion. One of my faves of this year! Fannie Flagg's books also come to mind (she wrote Fried Green Tomatoes among others--all hilarious and touching), as well as those by Adriana Trigiani (Big Stone Gap etc). As for memoirs I loved Tina Fey's Bossypants. I fin...

Re: It's October...what are you reading?

I finished "Ellie" by Lesley Pearse and It was good, except there were tons of mistakes: spelling errors (even of characters' names), mentions of characters in the wrong settings, grammar errors...all very distracting.

Now I've started Burnt Mountain by Anne Rivers Siddons.

Re: It's October...what are you reading?

This weekend I read "Where we belong" by Emily Giffin. It was okay, if predictable. Next is "Ellie" by Lesley Pearse. It takes place in Post-WWII England with a theme of female friendship.

Re: It's October...what are you reading?

My library's online catalogue has been down since Sunday. I can't log in to renew anything or order anything. BOOOOO.

I just finished "Dare Me" by Megan Abbot last night. It was good, but reading about teenaged girls left me feeling jittery. Next up is the newish one by Emily Giffin.

Re: It's September...what are you reading?

I will miss the annual library book sale in London. I wonder if they have one for Bruce County? Although it would be nearly an hour away if they did. I just finished "Gone Girl" and have to thank you guys for the suggestion. I was riveted. It was nice to have a book that I didn't want to p...

Re: It's September...what are you reading?

Change of plan: Gone Girl will be first because it's "in demand" and they are only loaning it for two weeks.

Re: It's September...what are you reading?

I finished "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" this morning and loved it. Now I have "Dare Me" by Megan Abbott, and "Gone Girl" just came in for me at the library. I will have to go into town on Friday to get it.

Re: It's September...what are you reading?

I finished "Private Lives". It was pretty good, although it could have been a bit shorter.

I just started "Where'd you go, Bernadette?" and then I have "Dare me" by Megan Abbott. :awesome

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I just finished "Gossip" by Beth Gutcheon. I loved it. The cover looks a little chick-lit-y but there's substance and it spans over 40 years. I had trouble putting it down. I will have to read more of her books.

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I finished "Half Blood Blues" last night and I thought it was an interesting take on WWII. Now I need a break from heavy, so I started "Gossip: a novel" by Beth Gutcheon. Loviah “Lovie” French owns a small, high-end dress shop on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Renowned for he...

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I just finished the Lionel Shriver book. It was okay. The middle was boring and a bit of a slog but I liked the ending. Next is Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan. "Paris, 1940: A brilliant jazz musician is arrested by the Nazis and never heard from again. He is 20 years old. He is a German citize...

Re: Spoilers...50 Shades of....

I just read this today; cracked me up. It's written by Scott Feschuk, a columnist at Macleans. http://www2.macleans.ca/2012/06/24/forbidden-passion-unspeakable-politeness/ Fifty Shades of Eh The Fifty Shades of Grey book series, about a young woman who signs a contract to enter into a submissive sex...

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I read "We need to talk about Kevin" years ago and loved it. Then I tried the one with Birthday in the title and couldn't get past page 20. I'm not sure why, though perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for it at the time.
