Re: It's June - what are you reading?
I finished the Jonathan Kellerman, which was barely readable (not enough of a mystery, too much cop talk, stupid premise). Now I'm reading Please Look After Mom by this Korean author http://www.amazon.com/Please-Look-After-Vintage-Contemporaries/dp/0307739511/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1...

Re: It's June - what are you reading?
When M was born, I waited for this rush of rainbows and unicorns but it didn't happen. I absolutely fell in love with him quickly after but it wasn't this instantaneous feeling. And sure, I've felt bored with M. Sure, I've heard of absolutely normal, loving moms who didn't fall in love with their b...

Re: It's June - what are you reading?
Interesting, I didn't see it that way at all. The whole nature vs nurture debate I guess. I did "enjoy" the book as well. We have the movie for this weekend - anybody know how it compares to the book? No? Well, I was thinking about these passages (about Kevin's birth): "I felt - abse...

Re: It's June - what are you reading?
Annie, I can't stand books with no plot either. And I'm SO with you on Kevin. I read it last year and it's one of the best books I've read in years. So powerful. I was re-reading parts of it the other day because I saw the movie. To me the most disturbing thing was not what Kevin did, but what Eva f...

Re: It's May! What are you reading?
I'm reading Thanks for the Memories by Cecelia Ahern. It's the worst book I've read in a loooong time. I should know better, chick lit usually sucks, but I was in a hurry and picked it up for lack of choice. I'll finish it because it's a really easy read, but yuck. I can see how it could work as a m...

Re: It's May! What are you reading?
Hi Skye! Glad to see someone "new"
Mellen, I think it took me a while to get into Dragon Tattoo, too. Then of course I had to read all 3!
I finished the John Grisham, which was readable but VERY predictable. Now I'm reading And She Was by Alison Gaylin and so far it's very gripping.

Re: It's May! What are you reading?
I finished Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Ugh, it was a sci-fi/horror YA story! All the wrong labels for me! I only bought it because it was by Zafón. The main story did not convince me at all, and I only finished it because it was only 189 pages long. I didn't hate it, but it was SO not The Shadow ...

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
I've always wanted but dreaded reading this. Let us know how you feel.Next up is The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. Bracing myself for what will be heavy content. But I know the writing will be good so I'm looking forward to it.
And great to see you here!

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
I finished Before I go to Sleep and it was really, really gripping. Very good. At some point I thought I knew where it was going, but I was wrong. Good. I hate when that happens. Then I started Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (the guy who wrote The Shadow of the Wind). I didn't know it was supposed to ...

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
Rowan, does M let you read when he's awake? At what age did he start doing that? I can only read when Leo's asleep. I finished that book by Lucy Cavendish. It was pretty good for its genre. Its "genre" being fiction about motherhood. Now I'm reading Before I go to Sleep. Pretty good so far!

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
I FINALLY finished Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. Not worth it. WAY too much history and politics, not enough fiction and character development, IMO. I'm mildly curious to see what he'll do with the rest of the trilogy, though. Now I'm reading Lost and Found by Lucy Cavendish http://www.amazon.co.uk...

Re: It's March - what are you reading?
I finished Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. Are all her books the same basic plot: something happens to a kid, husband and wife think differently about it and it strains their relationship, then there's a trial and then husband and wife make up? Because I was predicting the story from the getgo. T...

Re: Beautiful bookstores
Ooh, there's one in Brazil!! It actually has several branches, and I don't know where that one is. There's one right here in my neighborhood (not the one in the picture), AND it's the original store and the one that gave it its name. Yay! (ok, I'm ridiculously excited about this). However, that's no...

Re: It's March - what are you reading?
I'm finishing The Age of Innocence. I should start believing myself when I say I don't like the classics (even modern classics). The story line may be interesting, the characters well-developed, but the pace... oh God. I can't stand the never-ending social calls to 500 different characters througho...

Rowan, you read 400+ pages in 24 hours? You guys have got to tell me how you do that! Kayley does the same. Is it something they feed children in the US?

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
Oh, I should clarify that I haven't read The Alchemist! :lol I *have* read one of his other books, though, and from everything I've ever read/heard, they're all equally bad. And Beverly, we agree sometimes, don't we? :headscratch Ok, we may have disagreed a lot lately, but I have a feeling that our ...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
Ew, seriously, Spudd? I was going to say that Paulo Coelho sucks! He does! His books are all self-helpy and badly written and just....just.... bad! Where's Lana to help me here? Once she and I talked Beana out of reading him, lol! It's disgusting that he's pretty much the only Brazilian author who's...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
Rowan, glad you loved Kevin. And I know, you don't really "love" a book like that, but it's great reading, isn't it? A bit unrealistic and you can tell she doesn't have children, but still. I finished If Today be Sweet and it sucked. Why does this keep happening? I love a book, then I read...
