Re: It's June - what are you reading?
I'm reading The Breakdown Lane by Jacquelyn Mitchard (sp?). It's ok so far. Not terribly gripping, but I think it'll get better.

Re: It's June - what are you reading?
I finished A Widow for One Year by John Irving. It took me forever because I loved it! I tend to savor books I love. Beverly, I can't believe this is the same guy who wrote Owen Meany! Now I'm reading The Child in Time by Ian McEwan. I'm finding it boring. He writes beautifully, but there's not much...

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
Beverly, I kind of think I should give Owen Meany another chance. But then I remember how much it annoyed me the first time I tried it and give up :lol But I think part of the problem with this one was the opposite of what happened with Great Expectations: I was trying to read a translation and it f...

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
I could not get into Great Expectations at all. Sad. I'm not usually much of a classics reader, but I have read and enjoyed a few. This one felt like homework every time I tried to read it. I made it to page 89. Part of it, I'll admit it, was the language. But I refuse to read a translation, I have ...

Re: It's April - what are you reading?
I read it when I was 16, then again about 5 years ago. The first time I think I was up almost all night to finish it. My mom did the same when she was younger, lol. Btw, you know there's a movie? It's really old, and they changed the ending, but it's good, too. Isn't it fascinating how she never men...

Spudd, I *just* bought Great Expectations! Just came back from the store. I still have to finish my current book (Jodi Picoult's The Pact), but let's compare notes! How did you like Rebecca? I love it!

Re: Discuss: Do audiobooks "count"?
Well, some people are huge fans. I'm not one of them. To me they're just not the same thing. But yeah, I think they count because they do tell the story.

Re: You show me yours I'll show you mine.
See? It would help! :giggle But seriously, why do they ask you to rate the books if then they suggest books based on things you DIDN'T like? :cuss You know, those automatic recommendations. It should be able to read ratings and THEN suggest something. I hated The Book Thief and I got tons of recomme...

Re: You show me yours I'll show you mine.
I'm going to pretend "84, Charing Cross Road" was my influence, and I hope you're going to read "Great Gatsby" and "Lolita" in English! (not like English is the only way to read, but Nabokov's use of language is just so playful and engaging) 84 was because I loved the ...

Re: Discuss: Why do some authors get bad over time?
You know, maybe it's just me, but I think ALL authors get bad after a while. Ok, maybe not bad, but repetitive. I haven't found a single writer whose books didn't start to sound the same to me after 4 or 5 books. Ok, that sentence sounds terrible, but you know what I mean. I have given up on several...

Crystal, yoo-hoo! The History of Love
So tell me: what happened at the end of this book that was a little Sixth Sense-ish? Did the main character have an imaginary friend or something? That we thought was real? :headscratch Was that it? I know there was something that kind of pissed me off at the end of that book, but I remember I was e...
