Re: Best Books of the '00s

I haven't read many of those, but here it is: Atonement - good, but not for any moment. You have to be in the mood for more quality and less speed. I'm almost never in that mood anymore, but I was when I read the book. Blind Assassin - I feel the same as Spudd. Empire Falls - Boring as can be. Never...

Re: It's November! What are you reading?

I'm reading Scarlet Feather by Maeve Binchy and OMG, it's bad. I mean, she's usually trashy, but some of her books are good trashy, like Tara Road and The Glass Lake. This one's boring. So I got The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and have been reading both, but mostly the latter. The former I just...

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

I just replied, Spudd :) I'm reading My Cousin Rachel by Daphne duMaurier. Her Rebecca is one of my favorite books ever, and this one's good so far too! The cover alone was enough to make me wanna read it (well, that and the fact that it's by Daphne duMaurier). Check it out: http://www.amazon.com/My...

Re: The Blind Assassin - Question/Spoiler

I didn't really understand how Iris knew that Laura was raped by Richard, I saw the little "checklist" but it didn't say anything about rape so how did she know that?? And what did that have to do with saving Alex? I think I'm even more clueless than you, Silvia. I think she just assumed ...

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

Rowan, I did not know about that, but can't you do the same on amazon? Spudd, yay! Someone's finally answering my question, then! :clap (I hope I can still remember the damn thing...). I'm about to finish Eat, Pray, Love. It was no more than ok. It's like a long blog entry. I'm a little annoyed now ...

Re: Anyone seen The Time Traveler's Wife?

It sucks!! I don't have a problem with Eric Bana (didn't know who he was), though the Clare in my head was Donna from That 70's Show. But I like Rachael McAdams. Anyway, I was afraid this wouldn't work as a movie, and it totally doesn't! You know how in the book she always says the date and how old ...

Anyone seen The Time Traveler's Wife?

I loved the book and I'm gonna check out the movie anyway, but I wanted to know if you guys had seen it. It has THE most stupid title in Portuguese ever. It's called "I'll love you forever".

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

Bugsy, I did finish it. It left me totally cold, I'm sorry to report. I guess I'm much more plot-driven than I thought. I need more action and fewer wrestling analogies!

I'm still reading Eat, Pray, Love. I'm in the India part now and.... slightly bored.

Re: It's October - what are you reading?

I'm reading The 158-pound marriage by John Irving and it's boring me to tears. Bugsy, if you can tell me how it ends and put me out of my misery, I'll be eternally grateful. I'm on page 160 and don't think I'll make it to the end. And it's only 250 pages! I'm also reading Eat, Love, Pray by Elizabet...

Re: It's September - what are you reading?

I don't remember the dog part, but the part where the bimbo mom is away on vacation and won't answer her cell phone while her son is coughing his lungs out and crying for her just about broke my heart.

Also, when you finish The Blind Assassin, please answer my question!

Spudd, I didn't find that book funny at all. In fact, as a mom, I found it very sad.

Re: It's September - what are you reading?

I read the first story in Paul Auster's New York Trilogy and don't feel like reading the others. I used to like his weirdness, but this one is too much. Now I'm reading Dennis Lehane's (sp?) Prayers for Rain and I'm totally hooked, which is kind of unexpected, since I'm not usually into mysteries/de...

The Blind Assassin - Question/Spoiler

So... I'm a little slow, but tell me: did Laura have an affair with Alex too, or was it just platonic? :headscratch I'm still confused. It was pretty obvious that the woman in the novel was Iris, but I got lost about Laura. Also, she accepted to practically be raped by Richard numerous times just to...

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I'd been meaning to post about it again. It did get better! For me it was after page 180 or so (I'm on page 400 now). There's a lot less of the science fiction story as the book progresses! I know all 3 stories are supposed to be intertwined somehow, but I'm still much more interested in the "r...

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I'm reading The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood and I'm... uh.... kinda bored. :crystal Crystal and Beverly, does the science fiction story matter for the rest of the story? I wanna cry every time that starts. Iris's story is much more interesting, although it moves too slowly for my taste.

Re: It's August - what are you reading?

I loved The Time Traveler's Wife too. But when is the movie coming out? I heard about the movie 5 years ago when I read the book. I'm still reading The Cider House Rules by John Irving. I love it. I just bought The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood on Beverly's recommendation and ordered The 158-pou...

I'm reading The Cider House Rules by John Irving. It's great, but the print is tiny and the book is long, so I figure I'll still be reading it in... October?

Re: It's July - what are you reading?

I'm surprised you lasted that long with so little action, Spudd. I would have given up around page 100. I'm reading The Schopenhauer Cure by Irvin Yalom. I'm enjoying it, though it doesn't have ANY action. It's all talk, but it's good! I just realized I contradicted myself. I don't *usually* like b...
