I don't think I've read the actual work, but I read segments and learned about it in high school. Will I enjoy "The Penelopiad" less if I'm not really familiar with "The Odyssey"?Crystal Meth wrote:April, I read The Penelopiad. Have you read The Odyssey?

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
Today I finished "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. I thought it was quite good! In a college lit class I had to read another novel of his, "A Pale View of Hills," and I remember liking that too. May have to read more of his work.... Then this evening I checked out "The Pe...

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
I finished The Hunger Games yesterday. Wow, what a good story! I really loved it. Didn't some of you guys say that the rest of the trilogy wasn't that good, though? What are they about?
I'm one chapter into Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. So far it's good.

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
In the last ~week I've finished both "Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free" by Charles P. Pierce and "The Bride Will Keep Her Name" by Jan Goldstein. The first one started a little bit slow but really grew on me. Someone who knows more about histor...

Crystal, do you recommend specific novels by Toews or just that I should read her in general? I added her name and The Book of Dahlia to my "to be read" list.

Re: It's January - what are you reading?
I'm about halfway through "Idiot America: How stupidity became a virtue in the land of the free" by Charles P. Pierce. It's all right, I guess, but not as entertaining as I thought it would be. If I knew more about history, I'd probably be getting more out of it; that was always my weakest...

I finished "Club Dead," the third Sookie book, yesterday. Meh. I didn't really care for this one at all. Haven't started anything new yet, and I may not until after Christmas...we'll see.

I finished "The Diviners" by Margaret Laurence yesterday. *sob* What a damn good book that was! Probably my favorite of the year and definitely my favorite of the 5 about Manawaka. I just loved it. I just started the third Sookie book, because it was waiting for me at the library. "Cl...

I'm still working on "The Diviners" by Margaret Laurence. I'm about 2/3 through it and am really liking it. She's a great author IMO.

Re: Best Books of the '00s
Yeah, it seems like a strange list, but to fair, it was posted on what is normally a celeb-gossip website. So, yeah. From the list I've only read a few: -Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (loved it) -Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (easily my favorite from the series; I love all of...

I saw this linked a few weeks ago and just found it again in my bookmarks. I'm looking through it now and just thought I'd share it here.

Re: It's November! What are you reading?
Careful not to say anything that could be a spoiler! :nono I'm probably going to sort of take my time with that series, just because they're light reads that make good "in-between" type books. Also, I'm getting them from the library, and there are big hold lists for all of them. I started ...

Re: It's November! What are you reading?
I finally finished that Oliver Sacks book last week sometime. I was kind of disappointed in it (a lot, actually), because I'd just start to get interested in a case that was discussed when the section would stop and he'd go onto the next patient. I wanted to know more about some of them! fwiw, I als...

I also did not know that about Google, Rowan. Thanks for the tip! Last night I finished "What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal" by Zoe Heller. It had been reviewed in a newspaper or something here not too long ago and sounded good, but I thought it was only so-so. Entertaining, I guess...

Re: It's October - what are you reading?
I finished "Cat's Eye" by Margaret Atwood--LOVED it. Definitely one of my favorites from this year. The other day I picked up "What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal" by Zoe Heller and also "The Science of Sexy" by Bradley Bayou (per Spudd's suggestion). I'm not very...

Aw, I'm sorry you're not enjoying it, Silvia. I'm not sure I want to tell you what happens...you're so close to finishing it! The wrestling stuff got a little old for me, but the rest of the story was good.

I'm still working on "Cat's Eye" by Margaret Atwood. I'm about 2/3 through it, and I'm loving it. The whole "I don't know how to act around girls" theme really resonates with me. So far I'm enjoying this one more than "The Robber Bride," though I did like that one too.

Re: It's September - what are you reading?
I just picked up "Cat's Eye" by Margaret Atwood. The others I had on my list were either checked out or not at the branch I go to, so I just got another one by her. Hope it's good!
