Re: It's January - what are you reading?
I'm reading If Today be Sweet by Thrity Umrigar. I love her style, but the lack of a serious plot after 140 pages is starting to get on my nerves.

Re: December! What are you reading?
I just finished The Weight of Heaven by Thrity Umrigar (sp??). Anyone read it? I loved it. I didn't wanna read it at first because it's about a couple who's lost their only child, but then I came across it again months later and bought it. It's obviously super sad and the ending is appalling and con...

Re: November! What are you reading?
Bugsy, I started a thread about it ;). I've been reading only Brazilian and Portuguese books lately. None of which have been translated into English. Bah. The one I'm finishing now is by a Portuguese guy named João Tordo. It's fantastic and he's still quite young for a writer (36), and this book go...

Bugsy! - I Know this Much is True - spoilers
Well, what I didn't like was the super neat ending. Well, ok, not that I *didn't* like it, of course I liked to see our hero happy at the end, but it was all so perfect. He got his wife back after she'd rejected him for 900 pages, got a baby after he lost his own, and he got RICH?! Seriously? I thou...

Re: October! What are you reading?
Bugsy, it's at the very end.
As for me, I've been reading books by a Brazilian author who hasn't been translated into English, so no point in commenting. Bah. Not that I'm too impressed with her work. I mean, they're very well-written, but don't have much of a plot.

Re: October! What are you reading?
Bugsy, I thought The Glass Castle was pretty good, if a bit too depressing. And a little unbelievable. I also loved I Know this Much is True! My only criticism is kind of a spoiler, so I'll save it for when you're done .
I'm still working on The Confession, should finish it tonight. It's very good.

Re: October! What are you reading?
Me too Spudd, but we already know we have similar tastes ;) I'm reading The Confession by John Grisham. The plot is not terribly original (black boy goes to jail and is sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit; his lawyer and a bunch of other people are trying to avoid his execution; small to...

Re: September already! What are you reading?
Holy crap! I was looking for a summary of No Graves as Yet on wikipedia, since I skipped 150 pages to get to the end, and I found out the author is a murderer! Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Perry

Re: September already! What are you reading?
Ugh, apparently I'm not the only one with bad luck this month reading-wise. This thread is so short! I read A Painted House by John Grisham, not about/with lawyers and it was boring. Not much of a plot. Now I'm reading (and ready to give up on) No Graves as Yet by Anne Perry, the first in a series a...

Re: It's August - what are you reading?
I finished The Girl who fell from the Sky and was very unimpressed. Way too much tragedy, way too little plot, annoying writing style. Completely forgettable. And it had one of my biggest pet peeves in foreign (to me) literature: misinformation about Brazil. One of the characters tells the protagoni...

Re: July! What are you reading?
I know it's August, but this belongs to July: I gave up on The Night Watch. I was hating it (sorry, Beverly ;)). Thank God for wikipedia summaries. You don't have to suffer through a book you don't like anymore just to find out what happens. Then I started The girl who fell from the sky http://www.a...

Re: July! What are you reading?
I finished The Wrong Mother yesterday and found it VERY gripping. I'm not much of a mystery reader, but I was hooked. That said, if you're not sure you don't want kids, you might wanna skip it. If you already have them or are sure you don't want them, it's fine. There are parts of what is supposedly...

Re: July! What are you reading?
Beverly, I just finished The Postmistress the other day and found it super boring, but I also loved The Time Traveler's Wife, so what do I know? ;) I started The Wrong Mother by Sophie Hannah last night and I'm totally hooked. It's the second of hers that I read and I think I may have found a new (t...

Re: July! What are you reading?
Now I've started The Time Traveler's Wife, a million years after everyone else read it. So far I'm equally captivated and confused. Ooh, you hadn't read it?? I'm jealous! Don't worry about the confusion, she does a good job of explaining every little thing. Trust me, I'm too stupid to follow compli...

Re: June: What are you reading?
Ugh, Cutting for Stone was on my list, now I don't know what to do. I loved We need to talk about Kevin, but I don't know whose taste I identify more with between you two! I finished The Postmistress. It was boring. It had all the ingredients for a great novel (set in WW2, the stories of 3 different...

Re: May! What are you reading?
I finished Water for Elephants and it didn't do anything for me. Bah. I hate when that happens. EVERYONE loves a book except you. You keep thinking "what am I missing?" the whole time. I think it took forever to get going (like 180-200 pages), so by the time it did I was so irritated that ...

Re: May! What are you reading?
Beverly, yes, I did read The Little Stranger and found it pretty good too. Funny, because I usually hate books with no clear explanation of things, but this one turned out great! I finished Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner and it was the first book by her that I didn't like. She always manage...
