Re: Favorite Books of 2010

Love is a strong word, and I think I only loved The Help (sorry to disappoint, Mellen :)). However, these were quite good: -Stieg Larssons's trilogy -The Weight Of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf -The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett -The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters -El Tiempo entre Costuras by ...

Re: December! What are you reading?

Mellen, you thought The Help was boring and predictable? God, that book made me cry my eyes out. Yeah, I was shocked by her comment too! Guess we're all different :) I'm still reading The Other Half Lives by Sophie Hannah. She took her sweet time getting into the story, but now things seem to be pi...

Re: December! What are you reading?

I'm reading The Two Lives of Miss Charlotte Merryweather by Alexandra Potter. It's silly at best and incredibly predictable. Remind me not to read chick lit ever again. Bridget Jones was nice. The billions that followed it, not so much. They never fail to disappoint me. The only reason I'm reading i...

Re: F*%$ it's November?

Mellen, I wasn't expecting much because I think amazon readers' average rating was only 2.5 or 3. I wasn't expecting TTW level at all. But a leeeetle bit more action would be nice. So far I like Martin better than anyone else. And Elspeth. She should have been alive the whole time, it would have bee...

Re: F*%$ it's November?

I'm reading Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (author of The Time Traveler's Wife). I'm about halfway through and not terribly impressed. It's readable, but there isn't much of a plot and the 2 main characters are boring as hell. I'll finish it and let you know.

Re: F*%$ it's November?

I'm still reading that Spanish book (see October thread). I like it. Don't love it, but like it. I still have about 130 pages to go. Heh, I'm a slow reader with an almost 3-year-old who stays up late.

Re: Wow October.. what are you reading?

I finished The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters and I really liked it, even though it took forever to get going and had no satisfactory conclusion. It takes a good writer to turn THAT into something good! But Ms. Waters did the job. It was fun reading all the readers' interpretations on amazon when I...

Beverly, I was going to ask you about her, but I think I was in a hurry or something. Well, I'm happy to report I'm on page 123 now and something's finally happened.

Re: It's September! What are you reading?

I'm reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters and I'm finding it terribly slow. Way too many descriptions and so far no action at all. But I'm only on page 76.

Re: It's September! What are you reading?

I just finished The Help and I need a hug :lol. I LOVED it, you guys were right. I thought I still had 10 pages to go, but I was wrong. I was devastated when I turned the last page and saw the acknowledgements. And I was also devastated by the events in the story. I was at a café and I actually sta...

Re: It's September! What are you reading?

I'm reading The Help. You guys were right, I love it so far. But it's so heartbreaking! I'm only on page 100 and I'm almost in tears already. I finally managed to finish The Pillars of the Earth! :yay I think it took me 3 months or so. Between the revision job I did, which cut way into my reading ti...

Spudd, The Help is next on my list! Assuming I'll ever finish Pillars of the Earth. I like it, that's not the problem. It's just that my reading time seems to be suffering lately.

Re: It's August; what are you reading?

April, I feel exactly the same way about short stories. Most times I just find myself thinking "ok, but then what happened?". It's annoying. I'd much rather get lost in 400+ pages.

Re: It's August; what are you reading?

I'm still reading The Pillars of the Earth. It's good. Not excellent, but good. Some pages turn faster than others. I'm still on page 590 or so (it has 1070+), but now that I finished the revision job from hell I'll have more reading time again.

Re: July - What are you reading?

It took me for freaking ever to finish Diana Gabaldon's Dragonfly in Amber. Beverly, I thought that part in France draaaaaaaaaaaagged. It got a little better when they went back to Scotland. So much so that I almost wanted to read the next one in the series. Now I'm reading The Pillars of the Earth ...

I'm still reading Dragonfly in Amber and I'm finding it painfully slow. Beverly, when does it pick up? I'm on page 357 and I feel like they've been in Paris doing basically nothing since the beginning of times!
