Re: December! Whatcha reading?

Silvia, I see what you mean about writing style. It was pretty painful last night when I started it, but I tried again this morning on my commute. It was a lot easier going, so maybe I'm getting used to it. Hopefully I like it! So you *did* like "The Nightingale"? "The Name of the Win...

Re: December! Whatcha reading?

Finished "Night Road," by Kristin Hannah. It was a captivating read, but I didn't love it. Not sure I'd seek out anything else by her, either. Not sure what's next. Need to see what's readily available so I don't have to wait on a hold to come in. Edit: the winner is "The Book Thief,&...

Re: December! Whatcha reading?

Just finished "Man's Search for Meaning," by Victor Frankl. Oof...Heavy reading but such a great book. Easily 5 stars. I will read more by him for sure. Highly, highly recommended. That brings me to 26 books this year. Goal is 30, so I will just miss it. If I hadn't paused to peruse Amster...

Re: December! Whatcha reading?

I stopped "The Republican Noise Machine." It was interesting but getting repetitive so early into it that I just couldn't bear the thought of continuing. A hold just came in for "Man's Search for Meaning," by Victor Frankl, so that's next.

Re: December! Whatcha reading?

Just finished "Occupying Privilege," and it was fantastic. It could use some better editing (to fix a few dumb typos, not for the content), but the message was so very good. It gave me a whole list of other reading to do, which I love. So I guess now I'll finally start "The Republican...

That's been happening to me too lately! I would think that with all the terrible news out there my brain would appreciate some fluff fiction, but nope. :shrug

Re: December! Whatcha reading?

Finished "Dust," by Hugh Howey last night. It was decent. So I've finished the trilogy and liked it but didn't love it. Worth reading, though. Onto "Occupying Privilege: Conversations on Love, Race, & Liberation," by JLove Calderon. I had to get this through the university's ...

Re: November?! What are you reading?

That's been on my radar for a while too, Sílvia. Apparently it's wildly popular all over the world...which honestly makes me a bit nervous, like it's been over hyped and will be a let-down.

Re: November?! What are you reading?

Just finished "The Invention of Wings," and wow it was great. I plowed through it and was sucked in immediately. Easily 5 stars. Next is "The Republican Noise Machine: Right-Wing Media and How it Corrupts Democracy," by David Brock. This is one mentioned in that documentary "...

Re: November?! What are you reading?

Finished "Bad Pharma: How Drug Companies Mislead Doctors and Harm Patients," by Ben Goldacre. It was pretty good--probably would be fairly shocking to someone new to the subject matter, but a) most of it was not surprising to me, and b) it was too repetitive. Needed a better editor for sur...

Just started "Bad Pharma" by Ben Goldacre. Only read the intro so far, but colleague has read it and said it was really good.

Re: October! What are you reading?

Finished "My Real Children." I liked it a lot while I was reading but felt a little underwhelmed at the ending. Still worth reading but not my favorite. Hm, and per my Goodreads list, maybe I never updated here that I finished "Shift." It was good for sure. I'll look for the fina...

Re: October! What are you reading?

Huge slump for me too. No way I'll reach my goal this year. Oh well! I did start "My Real Children" by Jo Walton, and that is quite good so far.

Re: September! What are you reading?

Just been going through Amsterdam guidebooks, which I can't really count as "read books." So probably won't reach my goal, but we'll see. Last night "Shift" by Hugh Howey came in for me, which should make for great travel reading. Hoping at least one more hold will come in before...

Re: August! What are you reading?

I marked that as something I'd like to read as well, but eek it sounds like something you've just got to be in the mood for. Or at least the right mindset. Finished "A Jest of God" over the weekend (so good; I am really enjoying rereading this series) and have started "As Always, Juli...

Re: August! What are you reading?

Ah, too bad about Underground Airlines, Mellenhead. That's disappointing. I finished "The Jesus Cow" and gave it 2 stars. It was just an odd book, like it didn't quite know what it wanted to be. From the Goodreads reviews this is not as good as his others. Oh well. I'm now a few chapters i...
