Re: August!
Heh, that pause didn't last very long. Last night I finished "Dead, Dying, or Nearly There," by...my cousin Wesley Wingert! He's a high school English teacher, and this is his first novel. There were definitely some editing misses, and he consistently used "alright" throughout th...

I finished "Native Son," by Richard Wright. It was a tough, emotional read but so very good--a true classic. 5 stars.
Not sure what will be next. I need to devote some reading time to finalizing our upcoming vacation, so I might just pause for a bit.

Re: July!
Last night I started "Native Son," by Richard Wright, but am not even through the introduction yet so haven't started the actual story. It's supposed to be a powerful read and is a classic, so hoping it will be really good.
Re: July!
I finally finished "Persist," by Elizabeth Warren. It was only average, which bums me out a bit. Her voice definitely came through, and I like how she divided the chapters, but it just was a little underwhelming. Still cool that it was free and is signed by her, though! Not sure what is ne...
Re: June!
Finished "This Tender Land," by William Kent Krueger, which is the current selection for work's book club. It was good! I wanted it to be more based in real history, but it really was essentially pure fiction. It's a great story, though, and it was an enjoyable read. Back to "Persist,...
Re: May!
Finished Queenie already. It was a good quick read; didn't love it, but it was ok.
I think I'm next going to re-read "The Golden Compass," by Philip Pullman. I'd read it back when it was first published and just want to refresh my memory on the story. I remember it being quite good.

Re: May!
Finished "Listen, Liberal." It was ok--kind of sad, also informative.
Just started "Queenie," by Candice Carty-Williams. It was the selection for book club at work; I will miss the discussion but still wanted to read it. It's ok so far.

Read what you love, my friend, read what you love.
Re: May!
Earlier today I finished "Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right," by Arlie Russell Hochschild. It was excellent! Just downloaded "Listen, Liberal: Or, What Ever Happened to the Party of the People," by Thomas Frank. After this one I will likely nee...

Re: April! (the month not the person)
I grew up calling them "tennies," like a shortened play on "tennis shoes," but as an adult it now seems like that is a pretty uncommon term. "The Giver of Stars" was pretty quality, and I gave it 4 stars. The existence of the packhorse library system was brand new infor...

Re: April! (the month not the person)
Just finished the Dark Money book. Ooof, it was painful! I mean, it was well-written and remained pretty engaging throughout, but it really clearly demonstrates how the state of US politics has gotten to where it is today. Oligarchy for sure, and yikes that's scary. Next will be a much lighter read,...

Re: April!
Sorry, Silvia, it was Rowan who read that book. This thread title is confusing for me. I always want to reply, "What? What did I do?!"

Re: April!
Currently reading "Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right," by Jane Mayer. You know, some nice light and fluffy reading. ;) It's probably the heaviest read of the year so far, but it's surprisingly engaging. Basically the lesson so far is th...

Re: April: What are you reading?
Just working on a couple Peru guidebooks and websites at the moment. Soon I also need to start studying for a professional certification, so that's going to cut into the fun reading a little bit.

Re: March - what are you reading?
I finished "The Hate U Give," by Angie Thomas. It was excellent--so very well-written and genuine. Sadly, it often felt like non-fiction, but I think that really shows just how important this novel is. I really love that it's YA also, just so that it possibly has greater chance to really m...

Re: March - what are you reading?
Finished "Lies of Locke Lamora." It picked up steam and ended up being a decent fantasy novel with an interesting and well-developed world. Going to continue working through a focused skim of another Peru guidebook and soon also start "The Hate U Give," by Angie Thomas. I'm hosti...

Re: March - what are you reading?
I just finished "When Death Becomes Life: Notes from a Transplant Surgeon," by Joshua D. Mezrich, MD. It was so good, and even though I'm very much biased (the author is a surgeon at my hospital! I don't know him all that well, but he's a great surgeon and really down-to-earth & funny;...

Re: June! What are you reading?
I've been reading to plan for our Europe trip and recently finished three Rick Steves books: -Belgium (Ghent, Bruges, Brussels, and Antwerp) -Germany 2017 -Europe Through the Back Door 2017 I love Rick Steves and found these just as potentially valuable as his Amsterdam book proved last year. I've b...

Re: April: What are you reading?
Finished "The Wise Man's Fear," by Patrick Rothfuss. It was very good, but I liked the first one better. This is "The Kingkiller Chronicles" series. And then I went back to "How to Transform Your Life." For sure by reading these long books I'm unlikely to meet my 30 boo...
