Ok, but you can add the extra books later! Ro, I posted it because goodreads emails it to us at this time every year. Of course no one's done with 15 days to go!

Here's mine! I really liked most of my 28 books this year; 17 of them got 4 or 5 stars. Not sure if that means I just chose wisely this year, or if I need to be harsher in my ratings! (On that note, do you guys do anything to keep your ratings more objective?)

Here's mine. 77. A few real duds, especially at the end, but that's what I get for taking "found" books on holiday instead of library books. There were also a few really great ones.

Yay! Here's my updated list: https://www.goodreads.com/user/year_in_ ... 16/8607760

What do you mean by more objective, Bugsy? I make my ratings meaningful to me, which probably means very subjective! I don't usually give a shit to literary value, but stick to my own enjoyment. My ratings are:

5 stars - Loved it and wouldn't change anything about it.
4 stars - Loved it but would change something.
3 stars - This is the trickiest rating for me. Liked it. Could either mean I loved something but realize it was trashy, or the opposite, didn't like it soooo much but recognize its literary value. Examples that come to mind are some chick lit for the former (Jennifer Weiner, a Jill Mansell I read earlier this year) and Atonement by Ian McEwan for the latter.
2 stars - Didn't like it, couldn't wait to be done with it.
1 star - Hated it, only finished because I paid for it and/or it was too short to give up on. I don't usually finish books I hate, though I might if it's a famous book (finished Lord of the Flies this year for that reason. Ugh. All those hours I'm never getting back. Also finished We Were Liars this year because I wanted to see what all the hype was. Turned out the incredible twist all the kids on goodreads were talking about was a trick I'd seen more than once before.)

This is what works for me :dunno

My ratings are similar to Silvia's.

5 *: LOVED IT.
4*: Loved it except for one thing (writing style, character, plot, editing, dialogue (this is a big one for me)).
3*: It was good enough to keep me going but either had 2 or more aspects I didn't like, or when I finished I felt flat or unmoved.
2*: Would tell others not to bother. Bad aspects outweigh the good.
1*: UGH. Actively hated, and probably complained to people while I was reading it.

Here's mine, it says I only read 26 books. It might be true, or I might have forgotten to log some, I'm really not sure!

Silvia and Blush, that's exactly what I meant. I think that in theory I try to do approximately what your scales are, but next year I'm going to try being a bit more regimented about it. I think I let the emotional aspects of a book influence my rating more than they should.

Rowan, you should totally get on Goodreads! I resisted for a long time, but it is so nice.

Oh, I totally do that. I often go back months after reading a book and change my rating because the book has (or has not) stayed with me the way I initially thought it would.

And yes, Ro, goodreads is fun! You can see what your friends thought of books you're considering, you can compare your books with them, you can get endless recommendations!
