July! What are you reading?

I finished The House of Special Purpose. Yeah, it never got any better than readable.

Then I wanted something light. Picked up The Break by Marian Keyes. I hated the last book I read by her (The Mystery of Mercy Close), but I did like several others, so decided to give this a shot. So far it's entertaining, even if her Irish terms drive me insane and send me to google way more often than I like when I'm reading. Oh well.

I'm currently reading The Book of Essie which I'm really liking.

I recently finished the recent Elin Hilderbrand The Perfect Couple which was just meh.

I'm pretty disappointed because I ended up taking only 2 books to TX last week and I couldn't get into either. When Will There Be Good News by Kate Atkinson which I went about 70 pages and will not go back to. I also started Cutting for Stone but I didn't read enough to make a decision on it.

I'm reading Hunger by Roxane Gay. It's good so far. I seem to have completely lost most of my reading mojo and have at least five books sitting around in half-read states.

I finished The Heart's Invisible Furies. Best book I have read so far this year.

Now I have a lighter book that I hope seems readable at least. Anything might be a disappointment at this point. It's called Beyond South, by Susan Rebecca White.

ETA: oh. NO. Not reading that. Blech. I'm in bed and tried reading it and my eyes nearly rolled out of my head. I'll update tomorrow when I see what else I have downstairs.

Yay, so glad you loved Furies too, Blush! And you're right, anything right after it will be a disappointment :mope I felt the same way.

I finished The Break by Marian Keyes, which was much better than I expected. I hated the last book I read by her, but this seemed interesting, and it was. She's so funny! It *was* a bit long... could have have been 100 pages shorter.

Then after reading 3 or 4 different samples, I finally settled on The Kiss Quotient. 30-year-old woman with Asperger's hires male escort to teach her about sex. How can it go wrong? I like it so far.

K, I'm going to try Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews. YA.

I got to 25% of the Kiss Quotient and returned it. The premise seemed interesting, but I got bored easily and the rest seemed painfully predictable. Then I got Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah because I was in the mood for one of her long soap operas. We'll see.

Err.... that wasn't working either. So now I got The Things That Keep Us Here by Carla Buckley. I'd been curious about this author, and this is about a flu pandemic killing most people on earth :awesome Sounds like fun.

I think a flu pandemic is more possible than we would like to believe.

I finished Me and Earl and the dying girl. It was fine. It made me laugh a few times.

Now I have Beyond Soap by Dr. Sandy Skotnicki. I maybe should have gotten off my wallet and bought the damned thing when it came out in May rather than waiting for it to arrive at the library. Although most of the important information is on her website anyway.

Right?

In the book I'm reading the family's quarantined at home. It's winter in Ohio and they've lost power. I keep thinking that if it were here at least we wouldn't freeze to death :paranoid

I finished Beyond Soap. Highly recommend.

Next is Calypso by David Sedaris. With what is going on in the world a bit of David Sedaris is welcome.

I finished "Dreams of Joy" by Lisa See. OMG it was gripping, especially towards the end. Took a little while to get going. It's the sequel to "Shanghai Girls" and it would probably be good to read that one first, but not necessary.

I don't know what to read next.

Finished the flu pandemic book. Really enjoyed it. The first half is a bit slow, but then it picks up. What is it with the crumbling of society as we know it that fascinates us so?

Now I'm reading Day Four by Sarah Lotz. It's supposed to be a horror story. It has only a 3.3 goodreads rating, and Mellen gave it 4 stars (not a good sign for me), and most people on goodreads say the ending is stupid, but I found the beginning so gripping. Well, I'll find out.

Whee, I just got the flu pandemic book from the library. There weren't even any holds on it!

I started "The Ramblers" by Aidan Donnelly, which I'm enjoying so far.

Just finished Bring Me Back by BA Paris which I liked but didn't love.

I also read Design Your Day by Claire Diaz-Ortiz on the train yesterday. Nothing new. :(

Up next is Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos which is a bit different than I've been reading which is good.

Finished Day Four. Yeah, I realize why the average rating is so bad. It started out great, then it got repetitive, and the ending is completely open to interpretation. And not in a good way. I'm not opposed to open-ended novels, but this one didn't give me enough elements to make my own interpretation. It was more like a "WTF? Is it over?" ending.

Then I started The Deepest Secret by Carla Buckley (the flu pandemic author). This is completely different. The blurb compares it/her to Jodi Picoult and so far I couldn't agree more. I just hope the ending doesn't piss me off like so many of JD's books.... But I like it so far. Very gripping.

I finished Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos which I really liked.

I'm reading All These Beautiful Strangers by Elizabeth Klehfoth which I just happened to pick up at the library. Takes place at a prep school - it's well written and I'm liking it!

I finished Closer than you know. It was pretty good.

Next is One Day We'll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter by Scaachi Koul.
