August: what are you reading?

Post by Blush »

I finished the short stories by Margaret Atwood. Some were better than others.

Now I have A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl. It's by Jean Thompson.

I read a few books on the plane this weekend.

Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis (not my favorite of hers)
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah (this was excellent; trigger warning for domestic violence)

I'm also 1/2 done And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and 1/2 done The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead.

I couldn't get into A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl. Trying Woman with a Secret by Sophie Hannah now.

Finished The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer! :yay I liked it. It was a little tiring at first, with dozens of characters, jumps in time and points of view, but after I got used to the format I was hooked.

I finished The Nickel Boys and read The Chain. Both were 3 star not amazing although there's a lot of buzz about The Nickel Boys.

I have Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman on my pile next. It's technically already due but at 20 cents a day I'll pay for it because it will take forever to get it again.

You just pay for the days you're delayed? At my library you don't pay, but then you're "grounded". You can't borrow for a while.

My library is a daily fine, too. I think it's 25 cents, but $1 for DVDs.

I finished Woman With a Secret by Sophie Hannah. It was ok; kept me guessing, but it was one in a series of suspense novels about a detective unit and I felt like I was supposed to know who all the detectives were. Some of them didn't need to be in the story and I think they were only there because it was a series.

Now I have a YA called The Date To Save by Stephanie Kate Strohm.

I finished Anne of Avonlea and now I'm on to Anne of the Island. It's really the "will they or won't they" of Anne and Gilbert that is keeping me going. I don't remember how it turns out.

I finished Close Enough to Touch. It was sweet and predictable.

Then I read Flowers for Algernon, which I'd always dreaded reading because I thought it would be so sad. Well, it is. But it's fantastic. Read it if you haven't.

Now I have Take Me With You by Catherine Ryan Hyde. I've never read one of her books, I just saw the movie Pay it Forward based on one of them and found it super mushy, and I expect this book will be too. But I'll try. It's such a gorgeous edition! I got it from the library.

I've read a few just meh books but I just finished Miracle Creek by Angie Creek. I loved it - 4 stars no question. I think I waited on this one for a while because of the title just sounded boring. Courtroom drama/mystery.

I finished Then She was Gone. It was weird but it held my attention.

Now I have How to Walk Away by Katherine Center. The first chapter is a little cheesy but we'll see.

I loved Then She Was Gone! It was a bit predictable, but good anyway. Now that takes talent!

Finished Vox. Utterly unimpressed.

I started a Brazilian dystopia written in 1981 about a future in which the Amazon has turned into a desert, the heat is unbearable and the air is unbreathable :? Timely, but I'm not sure I can handle it. Here, if anyone's curious: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/207 ... earch=true

Syl - I thought the premise of Vox was good but the story just veered and never came back. I was fairly disappointed too.

I read It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover - not my typical book - alpha male-ish romance but I was surprised by liking it. It was an easy read.

I'm reading The Bride Test which is decent.

I finished How to Walk Away. It turned out to be not cheesy.

Now I have Waisted by Randy Susan Meyers.

Spudd, I could maybe stomach it, but up to the point I read, I was starting to get bored. Yeah, I get it, everything's bleak. Now what happens? Is there a plot? I put it aside for now.

Ro, agree on Vox. Interesting promise, sucky execution. I read It Ends With Us, too, but just because I had to know what the big deal was. It has a goodreads rating of more than 4.4 or so. That's pretty impressive. Then I realized people were impressed simply because of the major theme (domestic violence, for those of you who haven't read it). Oh well. It was readable.

I started Before She Was Found by Heather Gudenkauf. I've read most of her books and they're usually satisfying thrillers about kids in danger. Yeah, it's a bit of a formula, but it works for me.
