August: what are you reading?

Post by Blush »

I finished Adults; it was different and I liked it but it did not make me feel any sort of emotion.

Now I have Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce. I believe it's about a woman who writes an advice column in the UK during WWII.

Finished The Forgotten Garden. I liked it a lot. Again. Can't remember how little I remembered. I had no idea what was going to happen.

Now I'm reading 28 summers by Elin Hilderbrand. It's based on/inspired by the movie Same Time, Next Year, about a couple who has an affair where they meet a weekend a year for decades. I loved the concept and the movie, and I'm enjoying the book.

I gave up on Dear Mrs Bird. Too cheesy.

I have an older Jane Fallon book called Got You Back. Then I have a bunch of holds to pick up.

I finished the Jane Fallon book. It was good but "of its time" (2009).

Then I read a Fredrick Backman book of essays to his son, can't remember the name.

Now I have The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes.

I finished 28 summers. LOVED it.

Now I'm reading Confessions of a High School Disaster, whose sample I started to see if it would be a good choice for a teen student. Turns out she picked something else, but I loved the sample of Confessions and decided to read it anyway.

I finished Little Fires Everywhere and liked it a lot. Would recommend.

Now I am reading Artemis, by Andy Weir. I only started it last night so I'm not far into it, but so far I love it SO MUCH.

Also, on my phone during breaks at work, I am reading the first Bosch book, called The Black Echo, by Michael Connelly. It's pretty good. I've seen the season of Bosch based on this book but I'm not far into it and things are already different, so hopefully it will still be interesting. I love the show so I was curious to read the book and see what the characters were like originally.

Spudd, I'll be interested to hear what you think of Artemis. I loved the Martian but didn't hear good things about this one. I bought it at a used book sale but have pretty much ignored it.

I'm reading Good Girls Lie by JT Ellison and I'm really liking it. It's taking me some time to get through.

I have a decent stack of library books at home: The Glass Hotel is probably next.

Jo & Laurie Margaret Stohl
Agnes at the end of the world / McWilliams, Kelly,
Bluebird, bluebird : a novel / Locke, Attica,
Girl gone viral : a novel / Rai, Alisha,
Master class / Dalcher, Christina,
The glass hotel / Mandel, Emily St. John, 1979-,

I finished Giver of Stars. Loved it. It was great to escape to another time and place for a while.

Now I have a short novel called Self Care by Leigh Stein.

I finished Confessions of a High School Disaster. Loved it and am now reading its sequel, The Year of Living Awkwardly. Also loving it.

I'm also reading Looking for Alaska by John Green, which my student picked. I'm at about 45%. My student is loving it and we'll probably finish it much faster than her previous choices (it usually takes us several months to finish a novel.) It's my third John Green and I can't say I'm impressed with him. He's a good writer, but I find his plots so boring. This is a huge hit with teens? I'd much rather read about goofy Chloe Snow (from the series I'm reading.)

And I'm also reading Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, which is ok so far.

I finished Self Care. It was very "of the moment". Kind of dark.

Now I have The Grace Year by Kim Liggett. It seems Handmaid's Tale adjacent.

I finished Artemis, by Andy Weir. It wasn't as good as The Martian but it was still good. Would recommend.

Then I started A Column of Fire by Ken Follett.

Finished the Teen Series I was reading. The last book was Notes from a Former Virgin. I loved the first 2 books, the third one was 3 stars.

Now I have Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner.

Ok, I gave up on The Summer Deal. Too cheesy.

Trying another light one: If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane.
