Planned Cheat Meal :-(

Post by Marie »

Ok, so if any of you are following the current challenge you know I've vowed to eat healthy until our vacation with the exception of one cheat meal which is our friend's birthday party. Everyone is supposed to bring a course with a wine pairing. So this should be some good food, right?

Right?

Wrong.

The host is providing the meat course. Guess what they are making? Tur-Duck-En. For any who have not had the pleasure of hearing about this particular tasty dish allow me to explain:

Take a chicken, stuff it in a duck, stuff that into a turkey.

:puke

I'm so bummed. I'm now going to have to waste calories on nasty food. :mope

But maybe things that other people bring will make up for it! I'd just have a sliver and just eat the turkey bit. I hate duck!

What's everyone else bringing?

That turducken thing sounds weird, but you never know, maybe it will be good. If it's not good, don't eat much of it! Hopefully you can fill up on sides. I know for me personally, the turkey is my least favorite part of Thanksgiving or Christmas meals, so I always just take a sliver and then load up on the potatoes, stuffing, etc. So maybe you can do the same thing. Or, just don't eat much and go out with Jeff to a nice restaurant for a real cheat meal.

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. :um

Just take some of the outer turkey. Or load up on the other 10 dishes...

You guys are obviously not familiar with John Madden, or you would know all about turducken. :lol

Marie, I agree with Spudd: just eat lightly at this meal, and then go with Jeff for a real cheat meal.

Everyone I've ever known that has had turducken has loved it.

I don't eat duck so I wouldn't try it, but most everyone else I've heard from said it was really good.

Anna, most people think green been casserole is a delicious treat. :giggle

I have no hopes for the tur-duck-en. None. I'm honestly not sure I could even eat the damn thing. The entire concept is just so wrong.

But what are the OTHER people bringing, Marie???? What are you bringing? If you're bringing brownies just park yourself in front of them and make a meal out of it. :eat

I won't know what other people are bringing until we get there. Like we signed up for a "fish" course. Others signed up for "appetizer" or such. No specifics. But the host just asked us to make a corn dish to go with the tur-duck-en.

Knowing who is coming (and therefor cooking) I do not hold out much hope.

That's why that chicken is so surly! He knows he's destined for turducken!

Ok, that's it. This is not your cheat meal. Tell Jeff he has to take you out for a cheat meal, as suggested by above wise women.

I don't even get how that works bone-wise. It must be really hard to cut into and separate the bones. :um

Crystal, what makes it even more disturbing, in my opinion, is that the poultry is deboned first.

Deboned! Well, where does the flavour come from then? The fat in the duck? Ew.

That's what I'm thinking. And if duck isn't done right it is downright nasty. And I don't see how you can cook all three together and have all the meat done to the proper temperature.

It just isn't going to be good.

I saw Paula Dean make on for a Holiday show. In between each layer of poultry is a layer of stuffing. EW!!!

The best think about duck is the crispy skin, if it's stuffed inside a chicken...ew!!!

Okay, the turducken is bad enough, but now they're requesting a corn dish? Corn is okay, but not a dish you make to take to a nice meal, IMO.

By the way, what wine does one pair with turducken? And what about with corn?
