October!

Post by Rowan »

I had a good reading month in September with Ninth House finally killing my book slump.

For funsies:

3.5 Project Hail Mary Andy Weir
3.5 Home is Where the Bodies Are Jeneva Rose
4.5 The Wedding People Alison Espach
5 Ninth House Leah Bardugo
3 So Thirsty Rachel Harrison
3 Slow Dance Rainbow Rowell
5 Here One Moment Liane Moriarty
2.5 Leather and Lark Brynne Weaver
3 The Night We Lost Him Laura Dave
3 Wanted: Toddler's Personal Assistant Stephanie Kiser

I'm currently reading Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and I'm really liking it. I always say I don't like character novels but I think if it's done well and I'm in the right mood I do like them.

I finished the Lynn Painter (..? Betting on You! That's it.) and it was cute, but not as much as Better than the Movies. 3 stars. It didn't help that I read it in Portuguese. Some books are fine and I even prefer in Portuguese, but rom-coms are terrible in translation. They sound like dubbed movies.

Now I'm reading Real Americans and I'm (gasp!) loving it so far? I'm as shocked as you are! I'm only on page 134 or so (of almost 500), but so far I'm really, really enjoying it. Have you read that, Rowan?

Sorry Project Hail Mary was only 3.5 for you, Rowan! I loved it. Though I only gave it 4 stars because I'm too stupid for all the science. Also, The Wedding People is on my list, and obviously, so is Here One Moment, but I'm saving it. So glad it was a 5-star read for you! I think ratings so far have been higher than with her previous 2, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Rowan, I am also surprised about your Project Hail Mary rating. I loved it so much. Ah well, we can't all love the same things.

I just put The Wedding People and Here One Moment on hold at the library and it says the wait time is at least 6 months for both, they must be popular! Ninth House's waiting list was only 18 weeks. LOL.

I am currently reading The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager. I feel like this must be one of the books that led to "The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window" TV show, LOL. Like, I've read this book so many times before, lately. The Girl on the Train. I forget what it's called but there's another one set on a lake. And there's another one about neighbours across the street from each other as well that I'm forgetting the name of. Anyway, I'm enjoying it, aside from the fact that I feel the general concept is overdone. It's a beach read type of book.

I tried googling for the names of those books I couldn't remember the names of and it's basically impossible. LOL. So they will remain unknown.

I just remembered one detail from the neighbours across the street book and was able to find it! It was called Good Neighbors by Sarah Langan.

I read only 1 book: Dear Mr. M by Herman Koch. The beginning and end were decent. It dragged in the middle.

Blue Sisters was really good!

I read Nothing Good Can Come From This by Kristi Coulter. It is a book of essays - she worked at Amazon and it was her ramblings on that and going sober. It was ok. I read her latest book and it was really good.

I was reading an early release on my phone this weekend. It's called The Plan by Kendra Adachii. She is a content creator, has a blog and a podcast under Lazy Genius. I really like her content but this book is just ok. I get what she is trying to do here - a "different" time management book for women written by a woman but it just didn't fit for me. There is a weird chapter on periods and time mgmt which just seemed so force.

I have a stack of horror that I would like to tackle this month. Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak is up next.

Finished Real Americans and it was a 4.5 stars for me! Go me!

Then I read ... Hello Stranger by Katherine Center. 2.5 stars. It was decent enough to finish, but some things were way too far-fetched and the villain was too cartoonish.

Not sure what's next.

I liked Real Americans too - it scored 4 stars for me.

I read Light Pirate this weekend which was really good. Kinda post apocalyptic cli fi. 5 stars and just really a good read. It is probably up there with Blue Sisters in a tie for best novel I read in 2024.

Not sure what's next. I started a book on Timeboxing (time management but it just seems like too many words for what the point is).

I finished The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. It was an uneasy but compelling read. I started off really disliking the main character but she grew on me.

Now I have the latest Mhairi McFarlane.

I recently started reading "Erasure" by Percival Everett. It's a bit high-faluting. I'm hoping it will pick up the pace a little.

Rowan, I commented on your goodreads, I LOVED The Light Pirate! It's one of my favorites from the last several years. I also loved her Good Morning, Midnight. Have you read that one? She reminds me of Emily St John Mandel.

Blush, I started The Paper Palace but gave up almost right away, at the first scene of sexual abuse of a child. Does it get easier? Also, I like Mhairi McFarlane, but I find her books hard to read in English :paranoid Some have been translated into Portuguese.

I read All That is Mine I Carry with Me by William Landay. Liked it a lot, gave it 4 stars. I liked it better than his beloved Defending Jacob, which I found a little slow.

Now I'm reading With Teeth by Kristen Arnett. I'm about halfway through. It's readable, but I'm not loving it. Will probably end up a 3 stars.

Silvia, after that first scene I was on alert. There were a couple other disturbing scenes but once I realized, I skipped over them.

I'll probably pass, then.

Finished With Teeth. It went downhill fast. Ended up giving it 2 stars.

Then I read Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez. 3.5 stars. I thought it was less cliché and more dramatic than your average romance, so I liked it.

Now I'm reading ... We Were the Lucky Ones. It's about the Holocaust, and I'm still not sure I want to be reading something that heavy, but it's based on the true story of the author's family and I think most of them survived.
