Mellen, I just read Company by max Barry because Lexicon sounded good but there was a wait. I liked it although it was a bit odd. I thought of Spudd because she works for a big company.

I finished the Jen Kirkman book about being childfree and it was about what I expected. Next up is Maya's Notebook. I need something to sink my teeth into.

Finished Joyland. Vintage King, I loved it.

I picked up Dark Places by Gillian Flynn today. Will probably start that instead of the other books I should be reading because they are due back first.

EDIT: Finished Dark Places. It was VERY good. I think it's her best book, better than Gone Girl or Sharp Objects but it's not as completely bizarre and twisty as the other two.

I started The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling last night.

My 2 Brazilian historical fictions didn't grab me at all. The first has been done to death: woman in love with a priest. And it was set 200 years ago, so the writer tried to sound like the writers from then. The second seemed more promising: story of a family, set in a more interesting time, when slavery was abolished. Bah. What a waste. There were way too many characters and each chapter was set in a different time (like 50 years apart). I like a little bit of flashback, but this was annoying. It took me 2 pages at the beginning of each chapter to realize who he was talking about and WHEN. Not to mention the flowery language and the lack of plot. Bah.

Now on to Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. And hitting the bookstore today to see what's next.

Finished The Cuckoo's Calling - it was good! I'll definitely read the next one.

Next up is either Lost Girls by Robert Kolker or The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

I just read "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" which was pretty good. Before that, I read "Wool Omnibus" which I loved.

I really loved Come, Thou Tortoise. The premise is odd but it's very well written.

I'm about 3/4 done with The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Bizarre but good. It's short, Rowan (178 pages).

Another vote for the Wool Omnibus. I couldn't put it down.

I just finished Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende. Silvia recommended it--thank you Silvia! It took me a while to read the first half because I didn't seem to have as much time as normal but once I got to the middle I finished it in a day. It was very very good.

Next up is Learning to Swim by Sarah J. Henry. I think it's the first in a series.

I finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaimen. It was a strange, lovely book.

I started Lost Girls: and unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker today. And I have the The Rathbones waiting at the library for me.

I started The Mothers last night. It's fiction account of the adoption process - so far so good.

Yay! Glad you liked it. It's so frustrating when you hate a book somebody else was raving about.

Learning to Swim was quite good; a suspense with a smart heroine.

Now I have Family Pictures by Jane Green. I have one more on the shelf from the library but I'll see what else I can find there today.

I finished The Mothers yesterday. I don't really recommend it....

Next up is Race Against the Dying. Lots of hockey practice this week so should get lots of reading in. Hopefully.

Ugh, quit the Jane Green after 50 pages. The dialogue was beyond cheesy.

Sisterland came in for me at the library yesterday, so I'll start that instead.

Finished Sharp Objects. Dark and depressing, but good. Then I started Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Fabulous title and cover, promising start. Fingers crossed! Mellen, I saw that you gave it 5 stars. Hope we agree!

I'm liking Race Against the Dying so far. Older female lead which is nice for a change.

I just finished "Old Man's War" by John Scalzi. It was pretty good, along the lines of Robert A Heinlein if you know his stuff. Sci-fi.

Now I'm reading "Findependence Day" by Jonathan Chevreaux, which is a personal finance book. It is my huge goal to become financially independent and that's the theme of this book. So far it's kinda cheesy, though.
