December!

December!
I'm in the middle of Fantasticland which is a Lord of the Flies type story that takes place at an amusement park after a terrible hurricane. It's good so far - I didn't have much time this weekend to read as we were prepping for the week and helping with SAT prep.
Re: December!
That sounds entertaining! I'll await the final review.
I'm still reading the same time travel book by Octavia Butler. I've forgotten the title but I'm pretty sure it starts with M. That's the trouble with e-books, you don't see the title every time you pick it up to start reading so you forget what they're called. Anyway, I'm probably halfway into it now and it's still really good.

Re: December!
Spudd, you're reading Kindred
I loved it, btw. Very good book.
Let's see... I gave up on the Brazilian YA I was reading. Then I read I'm Glad My Mom Died, which was horrifying but also... exactly what I expected? I feel bad about saying something like that about someone's memoir, but yeah. I'm sorry for the author (and also glad her mom died), but this book held zero surprises, after reading a couple of reviews.
Now I'm reading The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley. I bought it years ago and had it marked as DNF in my goodreads. Huh. I'm quite enjoying it this time. It's a historical romance with time travel, not unlike Outlander, but much, MUCH shorter, yet with less adventure and more description. I think this may be why I gave it up before, it's a bit too descriptive sometimes.

Where's everyone?
Finished The Rose Garden. It was ok. Gave it 3 stars. Now I'm rereading a Brazilian, I'm Still Here, on which the movie I saw last week was based. It's excellent.

Re: December!
I finally finished Fantasticland last night. It's weird - I liked it but I haven't had the time to read so I wonder if it would have scored higher if I had more time to read and didn't stretch it out so long. I just scrolled back and see that I mentioned in on 12/2 -- yikes! That's the longest a 300ish page book has taken me forever.
Not sure what's next. I also won't make my goal of 100 - I'm at 89 now. I'm trying not to let it get to me but it really shows me how my work life balance is effed up.

Re: December!
Thanks for the idea Blush -- i made a list of 300pp books.
Re: December!
I finished Kindred by Octavia Butler and really enjoyed it. Would recommend.
Now I'm reading a non-fiction book about how to manage your time so you don't feel overwhelmed. I don't know why, I rarely feel that way. I should probably ditch it and start something else. It is good for falling asleep to, though. It's called "Overwhelmed" by Brigid Schulte.

Re: December!
I just read Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? by Caitlin Doughty. It's just short stories about death, corpses, etc from a funeral director. It was fine - easy read.
Not sure what is next...

Re: December!
I read 5 Brazilians in a row, with varying degrees of satisfaction. I gave them literally 1,2,3,4, and 5 stars, ha! Not in that order. Actually, the 1-star one I didn't rate. It was so bad I felt bad for the author, who's kind of unknown. None of them have been translated into English. Then I read 2001- a space odyssey, the classic from 1968. I loved it, though it did fry my brain towards the end a little bit and I had to read some reviews with spoilers on goodreads to see if I had understood it right. Turns out I'd missed something important
Re: December!
But Blush, what about the percentage of good books? Has it gone down as well? I ask because, even though I read much more on the Kindle than I ever read before I had one, the number of great books hasn't really gone up
My last finished book of the year was 2010, the sequel to 2001. Good, but I need a break from space talk now.

Re: December!
Hope you haven't caught my disease, but also, I think it's natural to get pickier with age. About everything.
Re: December!
I just finished "The Last Animal" by Ramona Ausubel last night. It was well written but unsatisfying. I enjoyed the ride for the most part.
It's amazing though that Random House let a major editing mistake slip through. There was one part, fairly near the beginning, where it was obvious that they had changed their minds about which sentence to use and left both versions in and so it ended up not making sense. I expect that in self-published books but not in Random House books!
