August!

Post by Rowan »

I'm slacking as it is 8/7 and just posting August thread.

Read a few meh books that I was excited about:

Worst Case Scenario: TJ Newman (loved her first 2 but this one was 3 stars tops)
Margo's Got Money Troubles: Rufi Thorpe (EVERYONE is raving about this but I thought it was at times annoying and at times fine - 2.5 stars)

Not sure what is next....maybe Kill for Me, Kill for You by Steve Cavanagh

I'm still reading Sapiens because it's nonfiction and that is always slow-going for me, but I'm still interested. I'm on page 330 or so (of 700.)

I read Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy, which is sci-fi-y about the environment. Very good.

Now I'm reading How high we go in the Dark, which is also sci-fi-y and extremely bleak, but I'll tell you more when I'm done. I'd actually started this earlier this year but gave it up because it's so bleak, but decided to pick it up again.

I've apparently been slacking on the whole board! I went on vacation and forgot how to post here.

I'm still reading the sequel to the Three-Body Problem. It's much better than the original book. The Dark Forest, I think it is.

Apparently August means middling books for me.

Kill for Me, Kill for You was meh 3 stars. He has books that are SO much better.

All This and More by Peng Shepherd. I was so excited for this as it was a change your life but also organized as a choose your own adventure. Story lines were bad, character sucked, the choose your own adventure piece was done poorly. I finished it but was powered by hate.

I started Five Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand for a complete 180. Should be an easy read but not sure how good it will be. Sometimes Elin's books hit well for me but not always.

Sorry about the meh books, Rowan. I know exactly how you feel.

I finished How High We Go in the Dark and ended up really liking it. Yes, it is extremely bleak, and it's a novel told in short interconnected stories that can get a little repetitive with the theme of death, but the more sci-fi-y parts made it totally worth it for me. The last story blew my mind (but apparently pissed some readers off on goodreads, so ymmv.) 4 stars. Spudd, it might be up your alley.

I'm also still reading Sapiens. On page 415 now. Some parts are fascinating, others less so, but overall I'm really enjoying it.

I finished The Dark Forest (sequel to the Three-Body Problem) and really enjoyed it.

Now I am reading the third book in the series, whose name escapes me, and so far I hate it. LOL.

Finally...FINALLY...back to reading. I forget how much I enjoy it :wave

Started Sing Me Home by Jodi Picoult but I just couldn't really get into it.

Picked up Apples Never Fall; I'm enjoying that. Maybe 1/2 way through?

I read Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Webb and it was SUPER graphic. I knew it going in and I could definitely handle the murdery graphic/body horror stuff but the sex stuff was really out of my comfort zone. I just skipped ahead - haha. This is a trilogy and I already put the second on hold and will likely do the same thing...skip over the super steamy parts.

I started Tom Lake by Ann Patchett but only 3 pages in or so.

I didn't really love Tom Lake. It was really slow. :whistle I was really hoping to break out of my slump - I don't think I've loved loved a book in awhile.

I'm reading Project Hail Mary and am halfway through it and it's just fine. Am I broken??
